French Mezzo-Soprano, Anaïk Morel, has been a fixture of the world’s opera stages since her debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper. Hailed by Le Figaro for her “magnificent Brangäne” following her role debut at the Theatre National du Capitole de Toulouse, she has been recognized for her talent as a singing actress in houses all around the world.
Recent highlights include her house debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Barrie Kosky’s celebrated production of Carmen, her role debut as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde in Toulouse, and house debuts at Teatro alla Scala and the Staatsoper Berlin. She has further debuted as Charlotte in Werther at the Opernhaus Zurich, as Der Komponist in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Hamburg Staatsoper and in Toulouse.
Morel’s diverse repertoire includes Sieglinde in Der Ring des Nibelungen, Mère Marie in Dialogues des Carmèlites, Ortrud in Lohengrin, the title role in Carmen, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Marguerite in La Damnation de Faust, Charlotte in Werther, Dido in Dido and Aeneas, and world premiere roles in works by Toshio Hosokawa and Marc-André Dalbavie. With concert repertoire which includes Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, Messiaen’s Poèmes pour Mi, Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder, Chausson’s Le Poème de l’amour et de la mer, Ravel’s Shéhérazade, Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Été, and Berg’s Sieben Frühe Lieder, Morel is a versatile performer lauded for her ability to convey artistry across song and opera.
Shas performed with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under Kent Nagano, the Orchestre national de Lyon, Les Musiciens du Louvre, Les Siècles, Insula Orchestra, Brussels Philharmonic, Musique des Lumières, and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and has toured with the Orchestre National de l’Ile de France. She has performed under conductors including Nicolas André, Daniel Barenboim, Sylvain Cambreling, Nicholas Carter, Paolo Carignani, Dan Ettinger, Mikko Franck, Alan Gilbert, Leo Hussain, Julia Jones, Kent Nagano, Hervé Niquet, Kazushi Ono, Kirill Petrenko, Vassily Petrenko, François-Xavier Roth, Sébastien Rouland, Marc Soustrot, and Lorenzo Viotti.
Morel has collaborated with stage directors including Luc Bondy, Guy Cassiers, Michel Fau, Claus Guth, Barrie Kosky, Vincent Huguet, Tatjana Gürbaca, Iannis Kokkos, Oliver Py, Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau, and Dmitri Tcherniakov. Her debut album was released by Timpani Records featuring French art songs by composer Charles Koechlin.
Morel was born in Lyon, France and completed her musical studies at the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Lyon with Francoise Pollet and graduated top of the class. She has earned top prizes from the Princess Elisabeth vocal competition and was a member of the opera studio of the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich. She currently resides in Normandy, France.
