The New York Times has highly praised Matthias Goerne and Daniil Trifonov’s Lieder, their recent release on Deutsche Grammophon. The album, songs by Berg, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf, and Schostakovich, appears on their July list of notable and highly praised recordings. Oussama Zahr writes that “Lieder is a heavy listen, but few artists are so temperamentally suited to this repertoire — and fewer still possess such a plush, darkly inviting voice” and praises Matthias Goerne especially for “his baritone [which] comfortably encompasses Schumann’s gracious melodies.”
