“Perhaps the most exquisite quality of Mejias’ playing is his ability to go inside the music and create his completely own sound world.”

“I am very anxious to give you my very high opinion on Anton Mejias, everyone has recognized his very special talent. Something in his Bach is very unique – not peculiar, just very natural and I think he could be remembered as one of the great Bach players of our time.”

Gary Graffman

Born in 2001, Finnish-Cuban pianist Anton Mejias was fascinated by the music of Bach from a very young age. He made his recital debut at the age of eight, and by ten, he had already learned the entire Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I. Since then, he has added the complete French and English Suites, all six partitas and the Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II, in his repertoire.

In August 2023, Anton Mejias made his US debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl under conductor Tarmo Peltokoski. Additionally, he has recently performed with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, and The Hallé Manchester.

In February 2023, he accompanied Matthias Goerne in Schubert’s Winterreise at the Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse. In the 2023/24 season, Anton Mejias made his debut at the Ruhr Piano Festival, as well as at the Dresden Music Festival and in Munich, performing Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II. Additionally, he performed the world premiere of “The Art of Memory—12 Preludes for solo piano in descending chromatic order from E to F” by Philip Lasser in Dresden which the festival co-commissioned for his debut. Regarding his debut in Munich in April, the Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote: “Technique is not an issue for Mejias, he can do everything effortlessly… (and) plays astonishingly virtuosic and fast.” It is no surprise Mejias is highly sought after as a pianist worldwide.

Besides concerts at Wigmore Hall and at the Newport Classical’s Chamber Music season, he will perform in São Paulo, Amsterdam, and Riga. In August 2024, he made his debut with The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen at the Musikfest Bremen under conductor Tarmo Peltokoski. In Bremen, Anton Mejias was awarded the “Förderpreis Deutschlandfunk.” The jury explained their decision as follows: “In addition to his extraordinary technical skill, he impresses with an exquisite touch and phrasing technique, through which he draws highly nuanced tonal colors from the instrument. This results in interpretations full of radiant transparency, captivating intensity, and compelling structural logic, already marking him as a mature artist with his own distinct musical vision.”

In September, he will give his French recital debut at the Piano aux Jacobins Festival. In December, he will appear at SWR Kultur International Pianists in Mainz, presenting Bach’s complete French Suites and the world premiere of Philip Lasser’s “Suite Français.”

“In general, when it comes to Bach, I try to highlight the incredibly rich emotional side and the heart of the music without overlooking its intellectual aspect and style. The beauty lies in the fact that these two sides belong together; it’s not about one or the other, but rather how both can immensely enrich each other.

On a more detailed level, I pay the most attention to articulation and the variety of articulation. With a modern piano, one can achieve incredible things, and articulation is one of the best tools a pianist has to make Bach sound both stylistically appropriate and rich in color and texture.”

He has won top prizes from the Viotti International Piano Competition and the Nordic Piano Competition.

Anton Mejias began his piano lessons at the age of five, then studied at the Sibelius Academy, and completed his degree at the renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia under the renowned Gary Graffman.
